The Surprising Secret to Success and That Most Leaders Forget
What is One Thing that will boost your results and that most leaders forget? You may be surprised by the answer.
The One Thing
In the movie City Slickers, Curly (Jack Palance) tells Mitch (Billy Crystal) that the secret to life is just one thing. Mitch spends much of the rest of the movie trying to figure out what the one thing is.
Each day presents new challenges and opportunities. The pace of change is accelerating, and it can feel overwhelming or frustrating, at the very least.
One of my clients was feeling overwhelmed. This was a big admission for her, as she is a driven and successful leader. She felt like she had to keep spinning all the plates to keep the business operating optimally.
I asked if she was getting enough rest. She replied that she could probably use some more sleep but that as we get older, we don’t need as much rest. Whoa! Hold on. That's not true.
Most doctors recommend that you get 7-9 hours of restful sleep each day. And scientists tell us that our brains require downtime.
Clarity, Calm and Confidence
Move your personal well-being to the top of your to-do list.
Give yourself permission to take breaks, exercise, move your body, and get ample rest despite all the pressing issues waiting for you.
Daily challenges and problems are solved more effectively and efficiently. When you are clear, calm, and confident, you are better as a leader and can anticipate problems more clearly to get ahead of them.
In a state of worry, overwhelm, or even fear, you are likely to make poor decisions, even wrong ones at the wrong time. Stress has a way of altering your perspective.
To have more clarity, calm, and confidence, here are Seven All-Star recommendations.
7⭐️ Recommendations to Boost Your Clarity, Calm, and Confidence:
Sleep alone is not the only determining factor in having good health. But it’s a big one.
Here’s what I recommend to clients who want to boost their results, elevate their status, make better decisions, and be the leaders others want to follow:
⭐️ Make Your Good Health a #1 Priority - your family, colleagues, and the people you lead will appreciate that you did.
⭐️⭐️Get 7-9 hours of sleep each day. Plenty of apps can help you manage this.
⭐️⭐️⭐️Not only sleep but make sure you get enough rest. If you feel like you need a nap, take a nap because you need one (sometimes 10 - 30 minutes is all you need).
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Take breaks during the day to rest your brain. Studies have shown that our brains need a 5-minute break about every hour.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Physical activity is important for feeding your brain. Exercise of just about any kind is good for mental acuity and mental health.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Focus on your breathing. Mindfully breathing to regain your focus can directly affect your stress level. Meditation guides and apps are a great way to start. Find a method that’s right for you.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Begin and end with gratitude, which is one of the highest human emotions. In that state, your ability to make critical decisions is enhanced, and you are at your best as a leader. I recommend that you list three things you are grateful for in the morning to start your day, and before turning in, end the day with three things you are grateful for that happened during the day.
A Defining Moment
I had to make my health my #1 Priority in 2019. A few months earlier, at the end of 2018, I was forced to make changes. Thankfully, I survived.
Don’t make one of the biggest errors that many CEOs, Managing Partners, and Senior Leaders commit. Make your well-being as important as the next big initiative.⭐️
