Calm and Confident?

I love to play golf and right now it’s one of the few "live" sporting events you can watch. It’s also one you can participate in and maintain a safe distance from others.

Whether you play golf or know someone who plays golf, or just like to watch it on TV, there are some great lessons that apply to life and business.

As some of you know, I played collegiate football at a highly competitive level. What a great experience that was filled with life lessons about teamwork, leadership and internal fortitude, among others.

Golf on the other hand is a sport of individuals. Pro golfers have a support team, but each day it’s the athlete, the golfer, who competes as an individual.

The stamina it takes to play at the highest levels, including the mental strain is amazing. (If you have ever tried to play four rounds of golf, back to back, you know what I’m talking about).

At its core, golf is a contest between man or woman vs. the golf course and the elements. At a much deeper level, it’s a contest within. You are competing with yourself. And it is as much or more a mental game as it is physical.

All of your life experiences come into play as you face challenging situations and which many times are outside of your comfort zone. Which of your internal voices will you listen to? Which will win the day?

No matter how much you practice, plan and prepare, invariably the conditions on any given day can be unexpectedly different.

And your particular swing on any given day can differ as well. For the pros, it’s much more subtle. For hackers like you and me, it can be like night and day.

A golfer needs to be prepared mentally and emotionally for just about anything. This requires a flexible mind and body that is able to adapt to change quickly.

In the martial arts it is said : flexible mind, flexible body.

And conversely, the same is true that a flexible body is a flexible mind. That's why martial artists practice and train and stretch so much.

In golf, the slightest change can make a huge difference. It really is a game of centimeters, and internal and external forces can affect how the golfer creates impact with the golf ball.

Winning golfers find a way to stay calm, or at least appear so; and they are confident in their swing and their ability.

Golfers know that if they trust their swing, they can compete more effectively. It becomes second nature. They don’t have to think about it.

And the winning golfers know when to adapt their swing and their course management strategies based on the conditions.

Will you be ready?

As a leader, your ability to adapt, to be flexible and nimble are vital.  There has been a lot thrown at you these past few months. It’s likely that more challenges will be coming your way.

The people in your life, those you lead, the customers you serve and the ones you love expect you to be calm and confident.

They need you to lead them. And on those days when you don’t feel like it, that’s when they need your leadership the most.

Win your inner contest and be the best leader you can be, every day.
